Ash and lacquer
This is the second sculptural piece in a series inspired by "go rin no sho" (the book of five rings). Each sculpture will reflect a part of the book that deals with different elements of bushido.

This was meticulously hand carved from a section of a downed ash log. The checks and cracks were stabilized with a unique pine resin mixture and cherry butterfly keys. The carved portion was hand sanded then coated multiple times with black lacquer. The lacquer was then hand polished to create a beautiful luster.

There is a juxtaposition between the carved, undulating, high gloss surface and the square, rigid, flat wood.
