Katana Koshirae (furniture)
日本刀拵

Picture
Creating "koshirae" (furniture) for a handmade Katana blade, forged in August of 1973 by "Masakane".
The blade is forged in the "Mito" style, a school popular in the 1800's.
All fittings are from circa 1800's (edo period) Japan.
The Saya (sword sheath) and Tsuka (handle) are made from the Japanese Magnolia tree. The saya has balck buffalo horn parts incorporated in the base and tip for structural reinforcement.
The tsuka boasts a "full wrap" of samegawa (manta ray skin) that is dyed black with Urushi lacquer.
All components were crafted in the traditional method using traditional tools and materials.
